Falconry is a very time consuming way of life. Your bird will need your attention every day. Help and support from your family members will make things easier and more enjoyable.
If you plan a vacation you will need to make arrangements with another falconer to take care of your bird, or take it with you, which may require import and export permits.
You need suitable facilities for your bird, such as a Mews and a Weathering Yard.
You will also need the proper equipment:
- A Glove to handle your bird
- Perches for your bird to sit on.
- Hoods of the proper size for your bird, Swivels, Leashes, Anklets, Jesses, Bells,
- Bath Pan for your bird to bath in and possibly Telemetry
Food is another major concern; your bird will need to have food each day. You will need to be sure to have a variety for foods for you bird on hand at all times.
Your bird will need to be flown at wild game as much as possible, during legal hunting seasons. Outside of hunting season your bird will need to be exercised as often as possible.
Falconry can be quite expensive, so be sure you are ready to lay out the funds before you go any further.
Falconry is a very rewarding way of life. There is no better feeling than when you fly a trained hawk at wild game, with everything you learned coming together resulting in a successful hunt.
